Breaking Down the EU's Antitrust Ruling Against Google

Google has been in the European union's crosshairs for years, but the EU'southward latest action against the tech behemothic is a doozy: a $5.1 billion fine over abuse of ability in its Android operating system. The ruling dwarfs the previous record for EU fines, last year's $2.7 billion in penalties for shopping comparisons in search results, levied against—you guessed it, Google.

The Why Axis BugThe ruling zeroes in on deals Google made with diverse smartphone manufacturers "that could not exist refused," to use Google's search bar and default to the Chrome browser in return for financial incentives and admission to the latest versions of Android. The Eu stated that these practices breached its antitrust laws, and in addition to the fine, information technology gave Google 90 days "to finish its practices."

Statistics and market inquiry business firm Statista aggregated market share data from StatCounter on Google's say-so in smartphone OS, search engine, and browser marketplace share across select Eu countries in Q2 2022.

As for Android, the market share varies significantly past country. Android has an 81 pct market share in Spain and 75 percent in Italy. In both France and Federal republic of germany, Android's market place share stands at 69 percent, while over the channel in the U.k., it holds only 49 percentage of the smartphone OS market.

Only the European union's antitrust ruling is less concerned with Android'southward dominance than with how the OS has been leveraged to boost Google's browser and search products. Statista compiled StatCounter across both desktop and mobile (thus somewhat less relevant to this mobile-focused debate) and found that Google'due south search engine market share in all five countries stands betwixt 90 and 95 per centum. Chrome market share is more varied, falling betwixt 48 and 69 percent in the v EU countries sampled.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said the company fully intends to appeal the EU conclusion.
